Local News Briefs Monday 5/25/15

The keynote speaker for the Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans Park in Fond du Lac today will be U.S. Senator Ron Johnson. The day begins with the annual Memorial Day Parade starting at 10 a.m. at the corner of Guindon Blvd and S. Main Street. It proceeds north to the park where the program will be held.  In addition to Senator Johnson, State Representative Jeremy Thiesfeldt, State Senator Rick Gudex, County Executive Allen Buechel and City Manager/Retired Army Colonel Joseph Moore will give brief welcomes. In case of cancellation due to severe weather, an announcement will be made at 8 a.m. on KFIZ.

Byron Memorial Day Ceremony

The Town of Byron’s annual Memorial Day tribute to veterans gets underway at 9:30 this morning at the Byron Town Hall.  Bob Wondra, a local Vietnam veteran, will be the keynote speaker. The morning program also includes unveiling of nine names added to the Veterans Memorial, a roll call of veterans buried in Town of Byron cemeteries, a firing squad salute, and an open house exhibit from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. The event, co-sponsored by the Town of Byron Veterans Memorial Committee and the Byron Historical Society, is open to the public.

Office Closings

City and County offices at the Fond du Lac City-County Government Center are closed in honor of Memorial Day today. Other City and County offices are also closed including the Fond du Lac Public Library and Senior Center. City Transit buses will not be operating and refuse and recycling normally picked up on Monday will be picked up on Tuesday along with the normal collection for Tuesday.

I-41 Resurfacing Begins Tuesday In Dodge County

Construction begins tomorrow on 7.3 miles of Interstate 41 in Dodge County. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction with overnight single-lane closures. The $9.7 project will resurface the highway, install cable and beam guard, and replace pavement markings and signs. The project is scheduled for completion by November 10th.

New State Crime Lab Director

State Attorney General Brad Schimel recently announced the promotion of Jana Champion to the position of Crime Laboratory Director for the Wisconsin Department of Justice. Champion will be responsible for the day-to-day activities of the three crime laboratories in Wisconsin. She has been with the Wisconsin DOJ for 28 years.  She has her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Mount Mary University.

Walk MS FDL Results

Organizers for the recent Walk MS event in Fond du Lac say more than 375 people participated in the May 2nd event at Marian University. The walk raised $33,000 to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to advance research and support programs and services for those living with MS. Sixteen MS walks were held throughout Wisconsin in April and May; four more will take place in September.
