Local News Briefs Monday 6/2/14

02-Jun-2014

An official with the Lake Breeze Dairy in Malone says they are trying to make the best of a bad situation following a 50,000 gallon manure spill into the Pipe Creek. Mark Diedrichs is the general manager for the dairy. He says one of the lines they were using to apply manure to a field broke or developed a leak that then filled a retention pond. That filled and the run off made its way down a 1,000 foot grass water way and into the creek. Friday they brought in a clean up specialist in to get an opinion on what they might be able to do. He says they would like to do what they can to mitigate the problem. He says they will be reviewing their emergency spill plan. Lake Breeze Dairy has about 3,000 animals and employs 35 full-time workers. They produce 6 to 7 million pounds of milk a month.

Shots Fired In Sheboygan Park

Police in Sheboygan are investigating a shooting incident that occurred at a City park over the weekend. Police says they got the word about the shooting at Kiwanis Park about 8 p.m. Saturday night. When officers arrived they spoke to witnesses who said shots were fired. No one was hurt and the suspects fled from the scene.  Police say the shots were fired in the area of the basketball courts and those involved appear to know each other.

Fatal Crash In Stevens Point Air Show

(Wisconsin Radio Network)-A fatal crash ended the Stevens Point Air Show early Sunday. Police and Fire Department responders were called at 12:20 p.m. Police Sergeant Tony Babl says the crash happened just east of the airport.  “The single plane was performing aerial maneuvers when it went down in a wooded area approximately 1000 feet east of the Airport runway. The 47-year-old pilot was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a scheduled performer for this year’s air show. The pilot’s name is not being released at this time.”

NFDL Staffing Set For Next School Year

North Fond du Lac Schools Superintendent Aaron Sadoff says they are pretty well set for their staffing for the 2014-2015 School Year when it starts July 1st. He says they do still have an opening for a library-media specialist. He says their current specialist Sandy Pittelli has an opportunity with another school district, but has done a great job for them. He says otherwise they are set. He says his administrative team is coming back and they are hoping the next school year will be even better than the current one as they continue to grow.

West Nile Virus

Fond du Lac County’s Public Health Officer urges residents to call the state’s Dead Bird Hotline if they come across a dead bird. Kim Mueller says a dead bird is an accurate way of knowing whether the West Nile virus is in the area. She says you should also call the hotline if you see a bird that seems to be acting unusual. The number for the hotline is 1-800-433-1610. You can also notify the health department by calling 929-3085. Meanwhile she says mosquito repellant can ward off mosquitoes that may be carrying the virus. She says anything that holds stagnant water could be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Only about 20 percent of people who get the West Nile virus display symptoms and only 1 percent suffer severe symptoms.

Buses To Books In Its 8th Year

For the 8th straight summer the Fond du Lac Transit System and Fond du Lac Public Library will be offering the buses to books programs for students going to the library.  Transit Manager Lynn Gilles says for kids all they need is a library card to get a ride to library each Thursday. The program is for kids ages 6 to 17-years of age. She says the library offers special programs just for kids during the summer, which is another incentive to use the buses to books program.

It was the second big lottery winner in Sheboygan County in a six day period. Someone who bought a Badger 5 ticket in Sheboygan for last Monday night’s game won $199,000.  As for the Powerball jackpot no one won the big prize Saturday so Wednesday’s jackpot will be worth $192 million.
