Local News Briefs Monday 6/9/14

Two people were injured when a car failed to stop at a Calumet County intersection Sunday night and ran into the side a semi truck. Sheriff’s officials say an 88-year-old woman failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of State Highway 57 and County Highway E. Her car hit the side of a semi driven by a 50-year-old man. Both drivers were taken to the Calumet Medical Center for none-life threatening injuries. The accident was reported at 9:10 p.m.

FDL Man Bound Over For School Incident

The 54-year-old Fond du Lac man who pulled a knife on another parent at Evans Elementary School last month has been bound over for trial. Leonard Dake was in Fond du Lac County Court for a preliminary hearing Friday. Dake waived his right to the hearing and was bound over for trial. He's suspected of lunging at an off-duty firefighter and paramedic when the other man confronted him about a reckless driving incident. No one was hurt in the incident, but a police officer had to use a stun gun to bring Dake under control. The school was placed in lock down during the May 28th incident. It happened as students were beginning to get out of school for the day.

Three Principals Assigned In FDL School District

The Fond du Lac School District has announced the assignment of three principals. Current Assistant High School Principal Michelle Hagen will become the High School Principal when Jon Wiltzius retires at the end of the month. She joined the Fond du Lac School District in August of 2013 after 23 years with the Milwaukee Public School District. Current Theisen Middle School Principal Brad Ebert will become the Roberts Elementary School Principal. He has been at Theisen since 2010 and prior to that taught elementary school in Manitowoc. Current Woodworth Middle School Assistant Principal Matthew Steinbarth will become Lakeshore Elementary School Principal. He says been with the Fond du Lac School District since December of 1999 starting as a teacher at Parkside Elementary School.

Two Hurt In Sheboygan County Motorcycle Collision

Two men were injured, one seriously, in the collision of two motorcycles in the town of Rhine over the weekend.  The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department says it happened shortly after three o’clock on Saturday afternoon on Highway 67 north of the Village of Elkhart Lake.  One cycle driven by 45-year-old James Miller of Kiel was following the other cycle driven by 23-year-old Mitchel Herziger of Elkhart Lake when they tried to go around a car that had slowed to make a turn, and the two collided.  Miller was taken to St. Nicholas Hospital with serious injuries.  Herziger suffered less serious injuries but wasn’t hospitalized.

Mascoutin State Trails Will Be Improved This Summer

Fond du Lac County Planning and Parks Director Sam Tobias says they will be partnering with the state’s Department of Transportation to improve the Mascoutin Valley State Trail in the Ripon area this summer. Tobias says they’ve partnered with the DNR before to improve the Wild Goose State Trail. He says the Mascoutin Valley State Trail they’ve worked on recently. A stewardship grant will lead to improvements to a two-mile section of the trail near Ripon from the City north to the County line. It will be resurfaced. Speaking of trails Tobias says with recent improvements the bike loop in the Fond du Lac area is seeing a lot of use by cyclists and runners.

Tickets Available For Breakfast On The Farm

It’s not too soon to purchase your tickets for the Breakfast on the Farm, which is coming up on Sunday June 22nd. This year’s breakfast put on by the Fond du Lac Area Association of Commerce’s Agri-Business Council will be hosted by the Ruedinger Farms located just north of Fond du Lac on Cemetery Road (W7222) in Van Dyne. Brenda Gudex is the Director of Agricultural Programs for the Association. She says there will be a lot of food and activities. There will also be tours, the kid’s pedal-powered tractor pull, a petting zoo and more. She says more than 3,000 people attend the annual breakfast. She says you can save a buck on the cost of a ticket if your purchase it in advance and tickets are available at the Association office on North Main Street in Fond du Lac, most banks, and at the KFIZ studios. Hours for the breakfast are 8 a.m. to noon that day.

Catholic Charities

Catholic Charities provides humans services to people of all faiths in a 10-county area including Fond du Lac and Sheboygan Counties. Sandy Leske is Catholic Charities Director of Mission Advancement. She says last year they helped out nearly 28,000 people providing nearly 23, 000 hours of counseling services. She says behavioral health is one of their bigger programs. She says based on their sliding-fee scale most of their clients pay little or nothing for Catholic Charities services. She says 95 percent of their clients paid nothing last year for counseling. Some of their services include bilingual counseling, legal services for immigrants and help with adoptions. Mega Mondays Begin Next Monday At The FDL Public Library

For kids every Monday this summer will be Mega Monday at the Fond du Lac Public Library. Performances are at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Youth Services Coordinator Sarah Newton says free tickets for the first Mega Monday will be available at the children’s desk starting tomorrow and will be available each Tuesday for the next performance after that. She says the programs are mostly for those 12 and younger, but all ages are welcome. Next Monday is the first Mega Monday at the library with juggler and magician Steve Russell. Children 5 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Performances are each Monday through August 4th.

BookCellar Now Taking Credit Cards

Fulfilling the wishes of many customers, the Fond du Lac Public Library BookCellar now accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. The city’s only used book store is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Mondays from noon to 7 p.m. The shop, in the lower level of the Main Library downtown, is run primarily by volunteers. It sells used books, movies, magazines and music for all ages at deep discounts. A selection of rare and collectors’ items are available as well. Proceeds benefit library programming. The shop will run a Father’s Day Sale on Saturday, June 14, and Monday, June 16, offering a free home do-it-yourself book with every purchase of 50 cents or more. The shop accepts donations of used materials in good condition. Donations should be labeled as such and can be dropped off at the library’s Main Desk or in the drive-through book return bin.
