Local News Briefs Saturday 5/24/14

The new entrance that will be built at Moraine Park Technical College’s Fond du Lac campus this year came from an idea that fostered about 8 years ago. MPTC Director of Facilities Tim Flood says the college put together a ten year plan in 2006. He says one of the things they talked about was putting in more defined entrances at their campuses in Beaver Dam, Fond du Lac and West Bend. He says the campus in Fond du Lac is the last to get the new addition. The new addition will also include expanded areas for students and veteran’s services. Ground will be broken in June with a targeted completion in late November.

ATV Use Know The Rules Of The Road

An official with the Wisconsin State Patrol says if you are going to allow your kids to use an ATV this holiday weekend make sure you’re acquainted with the local rules of the road. Sergeant Luke Newman says ATVs are allowed to cross a road, but not ride down it. He says anyone under 16 years of age isn’t allowed to operate an ATV unless they have had a safety course first. He says most ATVs have a sticker carrying a warning about the age requirement. An 18-year-old Rubicon man was seriously hurt after falling off a dirt bike in Fond du Lac’s ATV Park last weekend.

Infinite Campus Program Keeps Parents Involved

Parents in the Waupun School District have a way of keeping tabs on their children’s grades, schedule, and even their school lunch account without having to talk with district officials. Waupun Schools Superintendent Tonya Gubin says all of that can be done through the Infinite Campus program at the District’s website. She says its part of their student information service. Gubin says parents who are really involved in their children’s education use the program all the time.

Pier Pups Come To Walleye Weekend

Dogs who love the water will be right at home at Walleye Weekend next month. Pier Pups Canine Dock Jumping will be making its initial splash in Fond du Lac’s Lakeside Park on Saturday, June 7th. Fond du Lac Festivals Executive Director Leanne Doyle says you can enter your dog for the pier jumping competition. The first jump is at 11 a.m. She says there are three different divisions for the novice, open and pros with the final jump off at 6 p.m. Ribbons will be awarded for First, Second and Third place. Dogs can be registered for the competition at www.walleyeweekend.com

School Yearbooks Sought

The Fond du Lac Public Library is asking the public for donations of yearbooks from Fond du Lac County schools to fill gaps in its collection. Of particular interest are yearbooks from Winnebago Lutheran Academy and St. Mary’s Springs and from Goodrich High School from the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s. The library will accept yearbooks as is – writing/signatures are fine – but will not accept yearbooks that are moldy or water-damaged. Yearbooks can be dropped off at any library location marked “donation.” Any donated yearbooks that are duplicates will be given to the Fond du Lac County Historical Society.
