Local News Briefs Saturday 5/31/14

Officials with the Lake Breeze Dairy in Malone says they’ve been informed there’s not much they can do about the manure spill that worked its way into Pipe Creek. A leak last Monday from a manure applicator being used on a field filled a retention pond and the overflow ended up in the creek. About 50,000 gallons was spilled. Dairy General Manager Mark Diedrichs says while they trust the Department of Natural Resources knows best, they wanted a second opinion to see if there could be any mitigation to the damage caused to the creek. He says that’s why they called in a clean up specialist Friday.  Lake Breeze Dairy has about 3,000 animals and 35 full-time workers. It produces about 6 to 7 million pounds of milk a month.

Markesan Man Arraigned On Identity Theft Charges

The 32-year-old Markesan sex offender facing multiple charges in Dodge, Fond du Lac, and Green Lake County pled not guilty when he was arraigned on identity theft charges this week. Aaron Schreiber was arraigned in Dodge County Court for allegedly stealing a woman’s debit card last fall and using it to charge hundreds of dollars of purchases at a Juneau business. Schreiber is also suspected of officiating youth sporting events despite his sex offender status and making a series of bomb threats.

Parents And Safe Teen Driving

Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller encourages parents to set a good example for their children when it comes to driving. She says that’s especially important when you have a teen that’s learning how to drive. She says driving behavior is important. She says make sure you’re buckled up and don’t be using your cell phone in the car if you don’t want your teen to do the same. Mueller says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have a Parent Teen Driving Agreement that you can download from the CDC website.

Water Main Flushing Schedule Changes

Fond du Lac’s Water Utility has made a change to its schedule for next weeks’ fire hydrant and water main flushing schedule instead of starting in the northeast, city crews will start in the southeastern section of the City next Monday. They will move to the northeast Tuesday, the southwest area Wednesday morning and the northwest quadrant Wednesday afternoon. The City is divided into quarters with Main Street, 4^th Street and Western Avenue used as boundary lines. 

Agnesian Receiving Fast Forward Grant

Agnesian HealthCare is among those receiving Wisconsin Fast Forward Grants to train workers. Healthcare providers throughout the state are receiving $355,609 in grants to train 1,332 workers through the Wisconsin Fast Forward program. Agnesian will be getting $38,041 through the state’s Department of Workforce Development to develop and deliver training to 10 incumbent workers and 2 new hires for a nursing program. The latest round of Wisconsin Fast Forward grants totals over $900,000 and will help train 1,829 workers.

Buses An Option For Summer Rides

Fond du Lac’s Transit System Manager says buses are a nice option to save money on gas and get you where you need this summer. Lynn Gilles says they operate Monday through Fridays and a lot of people use them to get around. She says the City’s website has all the information people need about costs, bus routes and even has a description of 9 easy steps on how to ride the bus. She says you can also give them a call at the Transit Office at 322-3650. The cost of riding a bus is $1.50 for adults and $1.25 for students with tokens and seasonal passes available.  

Charter App An Option

An official with Charter Communications says an application for your smart phone will allow you to watch Charter television programs anywhere at home. Bob Pinter says once you have the Charter app you can log in to your Charter Internet account and watch live or on-demand television programming. He says you can watch over 100 live channels anywhere with your home wireless network. He says you can even set your DVR programming with it. Charter Communications this week also completed its conversion in the area to 100 percent digital programming. 

Art On The Island

The 46^th annual Art on the Island will be held Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lakeside Park in Fond du Lac. The Fond du Lac Artists’ Association hold the annual event at Oven Island. It’s free to attend and will include over 70 exhibitors, live music, food, silent auctions, a kids art area and face painting.
