Senator Ron Johnson, with cosponsors Senator John Cornyn of Texas and Senator Tammy Baldwin this week introduced an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2016 to award Fond du Lac native James “Maggie” Megellas the Medal of Honor. The amendment, strongly urges the president to award Megellas with the United States’ highest military honor for his courageous actions in the Battle of the Bulge. Senator Johnson says, “Mr. Megellas’ valor during the Battle of the Bulge was above and beyond the call of duty. Our country will always be grateful for the extraordinary heroism he displayed under fire.” Megellas received the Silver Star for his bravery during the Battle of the Bulge. He was born and raised in Fond du Lac and graduated from Ripon College. Megellas currently lives in Colleyville, Texas.

FDL County Click It Or Ticket Results

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputies ticketed 22 people for not having their seat belts fastened during the recent “Click it or Ticket” campaign. Deputies also issued 375 citations and 268 warnings. According to Sheriff’s Captain Rick Olig there were 146 speeding violations, 36 people were cited for operating after revocation or suspension and 84 for traffic sign or traffic light violations. There were also 4 drunken driving arrests, 3 drug arrests, 1 felony arrest and 4 arrests on warrants. The enforcement effort ran May 18th through the 31st.

Swarm Of Bees Removed

Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue Captain Garth Schumacher donned a protective suit to remove a swarm of bees from a bush behind a home on South Royal Thursday afternoon. The department has equipment and training for such occasions. The homeowner had a contractor coming to do some work on the home and wanted the bees removed. Schumacher says he worked with a local beekeeper and considers his part more of a training exercise. He says he helped the beekeeper move the swarm to a hive. He says it’s wasn’t that large of a swarm about the size of a volleyball.

Waupun School District Gets New Business Director

The Waupun School District will have a new business director starting next month. District Superintendent Tonya Gubin says with the retirement of Tim Stellmacher they needed to find a new business director. She says they’ve offered a contract to Carrie Hintz who is the business manager for the neighboring Randolph School District. Hintz will start July 1st. Gubin says Stellmacher planned an active retirement that will include time for water skiing and cross-country skiing.

Save A Sole

Through the end of July five Fond du Lac Chiropractors are collecting donations that will help fund $10 Payless gift certificates to help with the Fond du Lac Back to School effort this August. Ron Jacobson is the Director of Social Services for the Fond du Lac Salvation Army. He says it’s known as the “Save a Sole” program. Wink Chiropractic spearheaded the effort, but the chiropractic office that collects the most donations will win bragging rights and a traveling trophy and lunch for their office. Bauer Chiropractic and Corbett Chiropractic are collecting donations through June 21st. Other participating chiropractors include Moxon Chiropractic and Dynamic Chiropractic.

Art On The Island

The Fond du Lac Artists Association host their 47th annual Art of the Island this Sunday at Lakeside Park’s Oven Island. The event is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and there is no cost to attend, but you better bring some money because there will be 85 arts and crafts vendors who will be selling their art. There will also be kids’ activities, music, food and a silent auction that supports local student scholarships. Aileen Andrews of the association says four scholarship winners will have art on display during Art on the Island.

Leadership FDL Team Donates Buddy Benches

Two buddy benches have found a place in Fond du Lac, thanks to “Kickstarters”, a Leadership Fond du Lac community project team Kickstarters. The Buddy Bench is a simple idea to eliminate loneliness and foster friendship on the playground.  After months of research and planning, Kickstarters, recently unveiled the Buddy Bench concept at Friendship Learning Center in North Fond du Lac and Riverside Elementary School in Fond du Lac. A Buddy Bench was installed at each facility and to launch the program Kickstarters team members presented the idea to area students and faculty.
