Local News Briefs Saturday 7/4/15

Fond du Lac County Executive Al Buechel says the internet developer building towers to improve high speed internet service in the rural portion of the county is close to completing their work. He says Steve Schneider of Hilbert Communications, which owns Bug Tussel Wireless the company improving that infrastructure, tells him they are putting up the last of 11 towers. He says it will improve internet service in rural portions of the county and more importantly provide LTE the next generation of service. He says the county’s public safety communications will need that. He says the county currently has six towers, but will need more than that for LTE. He says a dedication ceremony will be scheduled this fall.

Fishing Platforms Providing Opportunities

New fishing platforms in and around Lakeside Park are giving the handicapped and others more access to fishing. Fond du Lac Public Works Director Jordan Skiff says the Conservation Corps contacted then parks supervisor John Kiefer about building the platforms. He says the project went forwards and 14 different platforms were put in. He says as a result a lot more people have been fishing in the park. He says it’s very convenient for people especially those with limited mobility and they’ve seen a lot of people using them.

Sargento Expansion Effort Aided By State Tax Credits

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation announced this week that it has authorized Sargento Foods Inc. to receive up to $735,000 in state tax credits to support the company’s expansion of two facilities in Kiel and Elkhart Lake. The company is investing $30 million to expand its production facility in Kiel and its technical center in Elkhart Lake. As result of the project, about 140 jobs are expected to be created at those two facilities as well as at the company’s corporate headquarters in Plymouth.

App Surprise

The director of the northeast regional office of the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau urges parents to have a talk with their kids about apps, games and ringtones for their smart phones. Susan Bach says normally there’s a cost and sometimes it’s a monthly fee. She sometimes they are signing up for a monthly subscription when they think it’s free. She says then they are surprised when they get their cell phone bill. She says there could also be spyware or malware attached to those features.

FDL Fourth Of July

Area residents can treat themselves to great music and a fireworks show at Lakeside Park in Fond du Lac tonight. The Fond du Lac Symphonic Band will put on their annual Americana Concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. Police and fire officials are asking you to leave your fireworks at home. The professional fireworks will start on the lakefront about 9;45 p.m. Festival Foods is sponsoring the fireworks display.

Marian Participating In Private College Week

Wisconsin Private College Week begins July 13, and all of Wisconsin’s 20 private colleges and universities, including Marian University, will hold open houses throughout the week-long event. Marian University will be hosting guided campus tours Monday through Wednesday of that week at 9 a.m., and 1 p.m., starting at Marian’s Welcome Center, located in the Stayer Center. Also, Marian University will be hosting an open house on Thursday, July 16, beginning at 1 p.m.  To arrange a visit, contact the Office of Admission at 923-7650.
