Light At The End Of The Tunnel For Oshkosh Defense

(Wisconsin Radio Network)-There may be some light at the end of the tunnel following several years of losses for the Oshkosh Corporation’s defense division. The company presented its annual shareholders report Wednesday morning. Spokesman John Daggett says the 2015 fiscal year will likely be the last one that the company will post losses in the defense area. He says sales in 2015 will decline by another $700 million from what the numbers were for 2014. He says 2015 will be a solid year. He says they are very optimistic about new contract awards they are pursuing in the Middle East, northern Africa and eastern Europe. Daggett says if the company receives a military contract to replace the Humvee the defense division will gain some security for several years. That contract could be worth more than $4 billion. Daggett says the company’s non-defense divisions are doing well.

E Cigarettes Banned From Use On NFDL Village Owned Properties

E-cigarettes have been added to the list of smoking products banned from use in North Fond du Lac village-owned facilities and vehicles. Village Administrator Chuck Hornung says they updated their policy a couple of months ago to include things like chewing tobacco. This week the village board decided to add e-cigarettes to the ban because of the potential harm e-cigarette vapors emit. He says the true effect is still being determined but e-cigarette vapors may be just as harmful if not more harmful as cigarette smoke. The change in policy went into effect immediately.

Adopt A Hydrant

Once again the Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue Department is asking residents to adopt a hydrant. Division Chief of Fire Prevention Troy Haase says snow has been mounting lately and they appreciate residents shoveling out hydrants in case they have to respond to a fire. He says if firefighters have to shovel out a hydrant during a house or apartment fire it takes them away from what they need to do to save that home or lives. He says a fire doubles in size every 30 seconds.

Haase says both the water department and fire department maintain the hydrants throughout the year to make sure they work when they are needed. He says the water department paints, greases and maintains the hydrants and makes sure water is getting to them.

St. Vincent de Paul Helps Out The Poor

It’s been nearly three years since the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Fond du Lac relocated their store to the old Copp’s Grocery Store on North Peters, but the need continues to grow for those helped through the society’s services. The overwhelming majority of money made through the store helps out the poor. Jean White is the President of Holy Family Parish Conference. She says those who need assistance are interviewed through a home visit. She says they help with some funding. She says sometimes people just need help with a utility bill or to make rent. She says they can also provide them with clothing and/or furniture from the store. White says in the conference area last year St. Vincent de Paul provided just under $200,000 in assistance. She says it works out to about $10,000 to $15,000 a month. Those who might need help from the Society can call 922-3650.
