Local News Briefs Thursday 5/1/14

If the mother of baby Theresa is ever found and convicted, she would face up to 16 years in prison. That’s according to the Jane Doe charges of Hiding a Corpse and Concealing the Death of a Child released Wednesday by the Dodge County District Attorney’s Office. The newborn was found in a garbage bag in a secluded part of the Town of Theresa in 2009.  The felony complaint was filed Tuesday, five years to-the-day that the body was discovered. The name of the suspect is listed as an “unknown female” with her specific D-N-A profile spelled out, several lines long. The DNA does not currently match any known persons in the state or federal database of convicted felons. 

Dodge County Officials Charge Hartford Man With 7^th OWI

Bond was set at $25,000 cash when a 52-year-old Hartford man was charged in Dodge County Court this week for his 7th drunken driving incident. Dale Mueller’s blood alcohol content was just under the legal limit for intoxication, but absolute sobriety is required for him because he is still being supervised for his sixth drunken driving offense. He was arrested last Saturday night while driving on State Highway 26 in the Town of Oak Grove. He’s back in court for a preliminary hearing next Thursday. 

Milwaukee Police Shoots Attacker

(Wisconsin Radio Network)-A Milwaukee cop fatally shot a man Wednesday after a struggle. An officer was responding to a disturbance call in a park near Milwaukee City Hall when a man ended up dead. Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn says the officer intended on helping the individual when a struggle ensued. The officer withdrew his baton, reportedly, to defend himself from that person, at which time the subject grabbed the stick from the cop. The man began beating the officer with the wooden baton striking him in the head. The officer withdrew his gun and fired several times hitting his attacker and causing his death. Flynn says after the shooting, back-up officers arrived and began CPR, but it was unsuccessful. The suspect had died by the time the fire department arrived.

Interim Chancellor Named For UW-Oshkosh

An interim chancellor was named Wednesday to succeed UW-Oshkosh Chancellor Richard Wells when he retires in August. Chancellor of Student Affairs Dr. Petra Roter will be the interim chancellor. UW-Oshkosh officials are hoping to pick the school’s next chancellor in late September or early October with the new chancellor starting in January.

Drug Take Back Effort Drugs Not Bombs

Nearly 700 pounds of unwanted and old prescription drugs were collected in drug drop boxes in Fond du Lac County during the National Take Back effort last weekend. Altogether 695 pounds of old prescription drugs were deposited in drug drop boxes in Fond du Lac, North Fond du Lac, Campbellsport, Oakfield, Ripon and Waupun. Not everyone knew about the limits on what was being collected. In Fox Lake police got a surprise when a local resident showed up with a cardboard box that had a live WW II mortar round in it. The Dane County bomb squad took the round back to Madison for disposal. 

Job Fair For Johnny Rockets Positions

Oshkosh area job seekers will get a chance to interview for a new restaurant opening soon in Oshkosh, Johnny Rockets, during a job fair Thursday (today). The new 2,500 square foot restaurant will be located at the Outlet Shoppes in Oshkosh. The job fair will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. between the Jockey and Corningware stores at The Outlet Shoppes at 3001 S. Washburn, right off Highway 41. The event will be focused on filling positions for cooks and servers. 

Former Area Sturgeon Biologist Bruch Promoted

Former DNR sturgeon biologist Ron Bruch is the new Director for the Bureau of Fisheries Management for the Department of Natural Resources.  DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp announced the promotion Wednesday. He begins his new position on Monday. Bruch replaces outgoing Fisheries Director Mike Staggs, who is retiring after more than 17 years in that role.  The Wisconsin Conservation Congress issued a statement yesterday congratulating both Bruch and Staggs. WCC Chair Rob Bohmann says, “Ron has done an outstanding job of reaching out to a diverse set of user groups and getting them involved in managing the sturgeon fishery on the Winnebago System.  His ability to engage the public will be a great asset to him in this leadership role.”

Bids Awarded For Ripon Street Work

The Ripon Common Council this week accepted bids for street work this summer. Northeast Asphalt of Fond du Lac was awarded the Jefferson Street reconditioning project for a low bid of $77,850. City Administrator Lori Rich says the project will begin later in the summer in July or August. Egbert Excavating of Green Lake was awarded the bid for the Vermont Street water replacement project for a low bid of $56,369. Rich says Alliance Laundry’s expansion project is going on there, but she says the water lines are about 90 years old and need to be replaced. Scott Construction of Lake Delton won the bid for chip sealing with a low bid $1.75 per square yard. Rich says chip sealing work will be done on a variety of streets.

Waupun School District Budget Surplus

It’s been a struggle in recent years for the Waupun School District with large budget deficits, but Waupun Schools Superintendent Tonya Gubin says they’ve been able to turn that around and will end the school year with a surplus. She says they will use some of the surplus to compensate teachers who’ve received master’s degrees. She says teachers weren’t adequately compensated while they were trimming past budgets so they are trying to restore the pay level for some of those teachers. Gubin says they will enter the new school year in July with a balanced budget.

Wounded Warriors Softball Team Will Benefit Relay For Life Effort

The mother of a local member of the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team says some of the team members will return to the Campbellsport area next week. Kay Wege is the mother of Josh Wege a member of the team who lost his feet when a roadside bomb went off during a patrol in Afghanistan in October of 2009. She says the Wounded Warrior team is an inspiration to anyone who sees them play or meets them. The team members will be in town for a kick off event for the Relay for Life event Mother’s Day Weekend. On Friday, May 9th at 5:30 p.m. there will be dinner at the Campbellsport High School cafeteria. Then on Saturday, May 10th at 3 p.m. members of the team will be playing against local celebrities in a softball game at the Campbellsport Girls Varsity Baseball Diamond. The Relay for Life event is Friday, May 16th.

KC Tootsie Roll Drive This Weekend In FDL

Members of the Knights of Columbus will be out at various locations this weekend for their annual tootsie roll drive. Jim Rieder is the general manager of the Knights of Columbus Hall in Fond du Lac. He says in return for your donation the Knights give you a tootsie roll and last year they raised over $14,000.  He says over the last 40 years they’ve raised more than $480,000. The money stays in the area helping out organizations that offer services for those with disabilities such as the ARC of Fond du Lac, Free Spirit Riders, and Fishing has no Boundaries. He says during the tootsie roll drive they will hand out more than 20,000 of the chewy treats. About 100 people will be involved in this weekend’s drive in Fond du Lac.
