A suspect in the Berit Beck case in Fond du Lac County in 1990 has been arrested for attacking a woman with a knife in a Walmart parking lot in West Bend. Fifty-year-old Craig Hron of West Bend was arrested Sunday morning after he allegedly waited for the woman in a parking lot and attacked her as she was getting into her car. She was able to fend him off until a co-worker and others interceded and held him until police arrived. The woman had gotten a restraining order against Hron, but it hadn’t been served yet. She was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital to be treated for lacerations she suffered in the attack. He is being charged with attempted 1st degree homicide, stalking and aggravated domestic battery. Hron was questioned after Berit Beck’s body was found in a ditch in Fond du Lac County in 1990. Evidence didn’t link him to the crime and he was never charged for Beck’s death. He is being held in the Washington County Jail.
Diesel Fuel Spill In Sheboygan County
(WHBL-Sheboygan)-A traffic accident in Ozaukee County resulted in a diesel fuel spill in Sheboygan County early this morning. Sgt. Jim Gottsacker of the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department said the mishap involved a semi which had apparently sustained a puncture to its fuel tank but it continued north on I-43. Gottsacker said when the leak was discovered about three o’clock the driver pulled off of the interstate at County V and pulled into the parking lot at the Western Shores truck stop where diesel fuel continued to flow out. The town of Wilson Fire Department and the Highway Department were dispatched and the leak was stopped. Gottsacker said the fuel was contained and a Green Bay firm was called in to do the cleanup. He said there is a small line of fuel in the northbound lane of I-43 from Ozaukee County to County V and larger amounts on V to Western Shores where the semi had slowed down.
Fewer Seasonal Employees Means Delays In Some Work
The City of Fond du Lac’s efforts to reduce personnel costs will mean having to wait a little longer for some of the peripheral services residents have grown accustomed to. City Manager Joe Moore says they decided to hire fewer seasonal workers for the Public Works Department this summer. He says that means some brush removal will take longer to get done. He says most of that brush is along the creeks and river banks and it will take longer to get to than it normally does. He says they will get to those areas, but he’s asking residents to be patient until they can because they have fewer people doing that work. Moore says they also got a few complaints about snow removal this past winter. He says we did have heavier than normal snowfall, but they also decided to have those doing snow removal come in a couple hours later than they normally do the morning of a snow event to save on overtime costs. He says that would never come at the cost of people’s safety.
Not Practical For FDL County To Battle EAB In County Parks And Recreation Trails
Fond du Lac County Planning and Parks Director Sam Tobias says the discovery of the emerald ash borer at the Mauthe Lake Campground in the Northern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest won’t have much impact on the County’s parks. Tobias says 4 or 5 years ago the County did institute a policy of not allowing campers to bring in their own firewood, but that was done on an honor system. He says unlike the City of Fond du Lac there is no practical way for the County to treat or take preventative measures for ash trees in its parks. He says there are 13 County parks and another 5 or 6 recreation trails, which is too much to oversee. He points out they have over 1,000 acres of County parks and recreation trails to try and stay on top of. The DNR last week also confirmed that an emerald ash borer beetle was also found in a trap in Dodge County in Watertown’s Riverside Park.
NFDL School District Finishes With Small Surplus In Two-Year Budget Cycle
North Fond du Lac Schools Superintendent Aaron Sadoff says having patience when it comes to school budgets is paying off for the district. He says they’ve adopted a two-year approach to budgeting just like the state. He says in the past two years they were looking at a $1.2 million deficit, but were able to handle it. He says instead they ended up facing a $600,000 deficit over those two years and they were able to manage with money from their fund balance. Sadoff says they recently did an audit and found out they finished that two years with a surplus of about $60,000. He says they are looking at another deficit for the next two-year budget cycle, but he’s confident they will also be able to handle that too.
Thiesfeldt Works On Bill That Would Protect Children From Identity Theft
State Representative Jeremy Thiesfeldt is developing legislation that would do more to protect minor children from identity theft. The state lawmaker from Fond du Lac says thieves are targeting children because they have clean credit records. He says research shows children and especially those from poorer backgrounds are targets. He says 1 in 40 households with children under the age of 18 are being affected by identity theft and those most vulnerable to identity theft are children ages 6 to 11 years of age. He says those young victims may not realize their identity is being stolen until their credit history becomes important in their lives. Thiesfeldt encourages people to check on their credit history and their children’s to make sure they aren’t victims of identity theft.
A & W Celebrates Root Beer Float And Wounded Warrior Project Today
A & W restaurants in Fond du Lac and around the country are celebrating National Root Beer Float Day by benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project. Jim Brajdic owns the A & W restaurant in Fond du Lac and A & W’s in Appleton, Oshkosh, Manitowoc and Neenah. He says today anyone entering a participating A & W restaurant will receive a small Root Beer Float free of charge upon request. In return it’s asked that you make a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project. Brajdic says he hopes to raise a minimum of $1,000 at each of his restaurants. He says their goal is raise $5,000. Over 50,000 servicemen and women have been injured in the recent military conflicts. Wounded Warrior Project’s 18 programs and services are uniquely structured to nurture the mind and body, and encourage economic empowerment and engagement.
UW-FDL Express Admission Day Wednesday
The UW-Fond du Lac will host an Express Admission Day on the campus Wednesday. UW-Fond du Lac Dean John Short says people thinking about becoming students can take care of everything during the day, which runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. He says you apply for the fall semester, sign up for orientation and registration, take a tour and start the financial aid process. He says tuition at the UW-Fond du Lac campus is the lowest in the U-W System. It’s been at the same rate for four years and tuition has been frozen at the same rate for the U-W schools for the next two years. Short says the UW-Fond du Lac has small classes, guaranteed transfer of credits to other U-W schools and a high rate of graduation for students who go on to other U-W schools to complete a 4-year degree.
Reconstruction Of WMH Parking Lot And Main Entrance Access Underway
Major reconstruction has begun for Waupun Memorial Hospital’s parking lot and main entrance access off West Brown Street. The project is expected to be complete by mid- to late-September and will be divided into two phases. As part of the first phase, the main West Brown Street parking lot will be closed. The existing circular drive will remain open for patient drop off, and patients and visitors will have street parking access as well as parking to the hospital’s west side off Elm Avenue. As the second phase begins around September 1, the main parking lot will reopen and parking will be available. The main clinic and hospital entrances will still be accessible, and patients and visitors will access from the existing parking lot near the Love Light tree. For a one-week period, clinic entrance access will funnel through the hospital entrance. The project is designed to help streamline traffic flow up to the main entrance, creating less congestion and better circulation for patients and visitors. It will also create a more even parking surface for enhanced safety.
Blood Drive Today
The American Red Cross has an urgent need for blood donors of all types, especially O negative, A negative and B negative, as fewer donations than expected were given in the first half of summer. If you’d like to give blood there are a couple of locations in Dodge and Fond du Lac Counties were you can donate today. You can donate at Maximillian’s Restaurant in Mount Calvary from 11:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. In Dodge County a blood drive will be held at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beaver Dam from 11:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
