Local News Briefs Wednesday 6/25/14

Dodge County Sheriff’s officials say a three-year-old child was seriously injured after being run over by a riding lawnmower in the Town of Lomira Tuesday afternoon. The child ran towards the lawnmower as the operator of the mower was backing up. Flight for Life flew the child to a hospital. The child’s condition is unknown. Sheriff Pat Ninmann says their thoughts and prayers are with the child and the family. The incident isn’t considered suspicious in nature. A 911 call reported the accident shortly after 2 p.m.

Two Hurt In Three Vehicle Crash In Dodge County

Two people were hurt in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 33 west of Sunset Road in the Town of Oak Grove Tuesday morning. Dodge County Sheriff Pat Ninmann says a 19-year-old Mayville woman was heading west on Highway 33 when she side swiped an east bound vehicle. She then struck another east bound vehicle nearly head on severely damaging both vehicles. The Mayville woman and the 31-year-old Beaver Dam man driving the third vehicle were both pinned in their vehicles. After being extricated they were taken to Beaver Dam Community Hospital and Flight for Life later flew the man to the UW-Hospital in Madison. The 27-year-old Beaver Dam woman driving the car that was side swiped wasn’t hurt. Sheriff Ninmann says inattentive driving was a contributing factor and there was dense fog at the time of the crash. 

Four E’s Help Reduce Traffic Fatalities

Fond du Lac County’s Highway Safety Coordinator says the 4-E’s are responsible for a lower number of fatal accidents on County roads this year. Sheriff’s Captain Rick Olig says prevention education, engineering of roads, enforcement and emergency medical services are reasons why the County has only one traffic fatality after nearly six months of the year. He says it also helps to have a Flight for Life base located in Fond du Lac. He says on the other hand 21-year-old Jeffrey Thill of Lomira died last week because he wasn’t buckled up when his vehicle began rolling over on Highway 41 southbound. Olig says buckling up is an easy habit to get into and could save your life.

Green Lake County Enforcement Efforts Pay Off

Green Lake County Sheriff’s officials have released the results of “Click-it-or-Ticket” enforcement efforts. On May 23rd there was 72 traffic stops on State Highways 23, 49 and County Highway A in the Town of Brooklyn. Sixty-three citations were issued including 56 for seatbelt violations.  Nineteen warnings were issued and there was one misdemeanor drug arrest during that effort. The deployment effort on June 6th in the City of Berlin, on State Highway 91 and County Highway F resulted in 117 traffic stops with 104 citations, including 74 for seatbelt violations. Forty-three warnings were issued, 4 people were arrested for drugs and two were arrested on warrants.

List Of Applicants For Lakeside Park Exploratory Committee Up To 41

It turns out 41 people applied for the Lakeside Park Exploratory Committee. Two more applications were received in the mail that was postmarked last week. The City Council will begin make decisions about the 15-member panel tonight. You can see the complete list of applicants at KFIZ.com. 

Expulsion Last Thing A School District Wants To Do

Fond du Lac Schools Superintendent Jim Sebert says they had a high number of students expelled this past year. He says they had 16 and they were all related to alcohol, prescription drugs or illegal drugs. He says they run into problems when parents allow their children to take responsibility for giving themselves medication. He says kids don’t really enjoy taking prescription drugs especially if they have side effects and don’t make they feel well. He says some will give them away to a friend or sell them, which leads to some awkward discussions with parents when they are caught. He says when a student is expelled they have them work with a tutor or take some virtual courses. He says if the student takes some initiative they are given an opportunity for early re-entry.

Waupun Man Facing Drunken Driving Injury Charges

A Waupun teen has been charged for injuring a passenger while driving drunk. Donovan Bostwick was charged in Dodge County Court this week for the April 27th incident. According to the criminal complaint Bostwick hit a tree in someone’s front yard and fled from the scene. A passenger suffered a concussion. Another passenger fled the scene and is wanted on a warrant. Bostwick’s preliminary breath test put him more than twice over the legal limit at .171. He was released on a signature bond and will be back in court next month.

FDL City Council Preview

The Fond du Lac City Council will get a preview of the 2014-15 Budget when they meet tonight. City Manager Joe Moore and Director of Administration Hal Wortman will give the overview including a time line for the Council’s work on the budget. The Council will also be asked to refinance some old debt. That includes refinancing debt that helped Wells Manufacturing with an expansion project and the Holiday Inn in expanding its convention center. The Council will also be asked to refinance Water Utility Revenue Bonds and pay off some outstanding Waste Water bonds. Moore will also talk about determining the selection process for the Lakeside Park Exploratory Committee. The Council meets at 6 p.m. at the City-County Government Center.

Ripon Police Reestablishing K9 Program

The Ripon Common Council this week gave the green light to the police department to set up a donation program to bring back a K9 program for the department. Police Captain Bill Wallner says the City is setting a segregated account after a well established business in the City donated $15,000 towards reestablishing the police dog program. He says the K9 program was discontinues several years ago. He says they would like to raise about $85,000 to keep the program going. He says it cost about $13,000 just for the dog and handler, then there’s the cost of equipping a squad car for a dog, a stipend for the handler to take care of the dog and other expenses. He says a K9 would really help with their drug enforcement efforts. He says since their last police dog drug trends have changed especially with heroin use. MPTC Beaver Dam Campus To Offer IT Applications Developer Program

Moraine Park Technical College will be taking an online program offering and bring it back to a classroom at the college’s Beaver Dam campus. Jim Eden is the Vice President of Academics for MPTC. He says their IT Applications Developer program is the go to program for people who want a career in Information Technology applications. He says in the past they offered the program online, but found out people would prefer to have it offered in a classroom setting. He says people who would like to know more about their Information Technology programs are invited to attend an open house at their Beaver Dam campus from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on July 22nd.
