Local News Briefs Wednesday 7/30/14

Two boaters were rescued near the lighthouse in Lakeside Park when their sailboat capsized last night. Fond du Lac Fire Chief Peter O’Leary says the two were wearing personal flotation devices and were helped ashore by nearby citizens. They were not injured. O’Leary says the weather began to change as a storm approached. He says it’s encouraging to hear they were wearing personal flotation devices. O’Leary says that should never be an option. The incident happened at 6:29 p.m.

Shooting In The Town Of Poygan

Winnebago County Sheriff’s officials are referring a 1st degree reckless endangerment charge against a 44-year-old man who shot another man during a disturbance in the Town of Poygan early Tuesday morning. Deputies were investigating a disturbance involving Gregory Kallas and several other individuals at a residence when they found out he had shot a gun injuring another man. The victim was treated for non-life threatening injuries and released from a local hospital. Kallas was arrested. Additional charges and or arrests may result from the investigation.

Plymouth Man Sentenced On 4^th OWI Conviction

(WHBL-Sheboygan)-A Plymouth man will spend nearly 8 months in the county jail for his 4th drunk driving conviction.  Fifty-one-year old Willard Weaver the Third was sentenced recently by a Sheboygan County judge.  He was also ordered to pay fines and fees of over $2,530 with payments of $50 per month to begin in September.  Weaver was arrested last December after he struck a parked car just a couple of blocks from his home in the city of Plymouth.

HomeServ Mailing Legitimate

Fond du Lac Police Officer Steve Olson says a mailing homeowners are receiving that looks like a scam isn’t. Olson says it’s from HomeServ USA Repair Management Corporation that offers an insurance policy for your water main from the sidewalk to your home, which is a homeowner’s responsibility. He says it’s basically insurance to protect you against a water main break in your yard such as people saw during our recent harsh winter. Olson says he checked with the water utility and the mailing is legitimate, but it is not from the City. The mailing went out at the same time last year. The City recommended checking with your insurance agent to see if you already were covered for repairs or to see if it is warranted. Also check the fine print on your policy. There are nearly 14,000 water service connections in the City.

Mercury And Brunwick Second Quarter Earnings Up

Net sales for Mercury Marine and its parent company the Brunswick Corporation were both up in the second quarter compared to the same period last year. Net sales were up for Brunswick by 4 percent to $1.1 billion. The Marine Engine segment, consisting of the Mercury Marine group, reported net sales of $652.4 million. KFIZ Pet Of The Week Earned Her New Home

Good things come to those who wait and for the KFIZ Pet of the Week that long wait is over. Fond du Lac Humane Society Shelter Manager Renee Webb says Abby was pregnant when she was brought into the shelter and needed an emergency C-section then was placed in foster care. The dog’s 6 puppies were all adopted within a couple months’ time. Almost 18 months later Abby was still in the shelter and they couldn’t seem to find her a home. The other day the Humane Society found Abby a home. Webb says the staff did a wonderful job with Abby during her stay and a couple came in every day to take her for a walk. She says that was very important to Abby so that she kept from going kennel crazy. Normally the KFIZ Pet of the week is a pet that’s looking for a home.

Crafternoon Sign Up Starts Saturday

Sign-up starts Saturday for the August 16 Origami Goldfish in a Bowl Crafternoon class at the Fond du Lac Public Library. The class meets from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.  Crafters will use glass vases, paper, string, rock and other supplies to make a pretty (and dry) goldfish decoration. All supplies provided. Crafternoon is open to adults and teens in middle school and older. Space is limited, and registration is required beginning at 9 a.m. August 2 at www.fdlpl.org  click Calendar, or by calling the Help Desk at (920) 322-3929. Crafternoon takes place every third Saturday of the month with a different make-and-take project.

Medicare Anniversary Marked

Seniors in Oshkosh will be celebrating the 49th anniversary of Medicare with cake at the Oshkosh Senior Center today. The cake is part of the dessert that will be served with lunch at 11:30. The anniversary event is being put on by the Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans and Oshkosh Senior Center. Next July 30th will be the 50th anniversary of Medicare.
