Local News Monday 12/30/13

Bundle up if you’re headed outside today. A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect until noon today with wind chill values at 10 to 25 below zero this morning. High temperatures will remain in the single digits until New Year’s Day. Overnight lows will be in the single digits to below zero for most of the week.

Frostbite Danger

(Wisconsin Radio Network)-It's bitterly cold this morning as we get a late December visit from Jack Frost, and that can lead to frostbite. Doctor Mike Halberg of St. Mary's in Madison says it's a serious matter if you're exposed. He says frostbite can lead to tissue damage to extremities like fingers and toes. He says hypothermia can also result in lowering your body temperature to less than 95 degrees if people are out to long in the cold or aren’t sufficiently bundled up against the cold. His advice: don't spend a lot of time outside, but if you need to be, take extra care to bundle up. And probably put off the ice skating or jogging.

Fatal Snowmobiling Accident In Columbia County

DNR officials say a 36-year-old Michigan man was killed in a snowmobiling accident in Columbia County over the weekend. It happened Friday afternoon around 1 p.m. near Cambria. Speed and snow conditions may have been factors in the mishap.

Plymouth School Board President Passes Away

(WHBL-Sheboygan)-The Plymouth School District is mourning the loss of its board president.  53-year-old Mark Rhyan passed away on Christmas Day due to pancreatic cancer.  The former executive vice president and chief operations officer at Sargento Foods was first elected to the Plymouth Board of Education in 2008, won reelection in 2011, and served as board president all those years. Board vice president Tim St. Clair will take over as president. A public memorial service will be held January 1 at 4 p.m. at the Plymouth High School Auditorium.

Snowmobile Trails Closed

Dodge County’s Manager of Parks and Trails Bill Ehlenbeck informs us that zones 2,3,4 and 5 of the County’s Snowmobiling Trail System are closed. Zone 1 remains open. Saturday and Sunday’s warm temperatures and sunshine deteriorated the trails to bare ground in many areas of the system. The ATV Trail on the Wild Goose Trail from Hwy 60 to Hwy 49 in Dodge County remains open. According to the Fond du Lac County Snowmobile Association website trails are closed in Fond du Lac County
