Byron Town Supervisor’s Spot Filled

An interim supervisor for the Town of Byron has been appointed to fill the term of the late Town Supervisor David Whitty. Even though Whitty passed away a couple months ago he won reelection to the Town Board. Tim Hackbarth was appointed to fill his seat for February and March. This past week when the Town Board met they nominated and approved Hackbarth to fill Whitty’s seat. Town Clerk Kay Oestreich says Hackbarth will have to step down from the Town’s Board of Appeals. Hackbarth is a past chair of the Town’s Historical Society and has been at the majority of Town Board meetings over the past five years.

Vande Zande Chairs Meeting As FDL City Council President

Rob Vande Zande chaired his first Fond du Lac City Council meeting as Council President this past week. Vande Zande was elected Council Vice President in January and Jim Sabel was elected President to fill the void created with Rick Gudex’s resignation to take a seat in the State Senate. Vande Zande has chaired several Council meetings due to Sabel’s ongoing health concerns and became Council President when Sabel recently resigned. He says he enjoyed chairing this week’s meeting as president, but Tuesday the Council organizes with its new members and a Council president and vice president will have to be elected for another year.

New Dodge County Sheriff Will Pick Chief Deputy

As Dodge County’s new Sheriff Pat Ninmann will get to choose her Chief Deputy, but the process isn’t as simple as it sounds. She says they posted the position both inside and outside the department and because it’s a civil service position applicants will have to take a civil service exam. She will get to make her choice from the top 3 applicants. She says the Chief Deputy has a significant role in the department. Governor Walker appointed Ninmann to the position after Sheriff Todd Nehls retired. His Chief Deputy Blaine Lauersdorf retired Friday.

Paul Sentencing Delayed A Fourth Time

The sentencing hearing for the Beaver Dam travel agency owner who bilked hundreds of customers out of their vacations has been delayed a fourth time. Deb Paul was scheduled to be sentenced in Dodge County Court next Thursday. Three previous delays were due to health and this time Paul cited a difference in case philosophy with her attorney. The judge revoked her bail and sent her to jail. Her lawyer Todd Snow has petitioned to withdraw from the case. Paul was $270,000 in debt when she closed the doors of Carol’s Tours in 2008 leaving about 200 customers who had already paid for vacations without their trips.

Party Patrols Start

An effort to crack down on underage drinking parties begins in Fond du Lac County today. County law enforcement agencies and the Drug Free Communities of Fond du Lac County are teaming up this year to do something about underage drinking parties. Part of that includes increased patrols or “Party Patrols” by law enforcement agencies during the high school prom and graduation season. Ten area high schools will hold proms over the next four weekends including the Horace Mann High School in North Fond du Lac tonight.
