Arrest In Sheboygan Credit Union Robbery

(WHBL-Sheboygan)-One of the men who robbed the United One Credit Union on Superior Avenue in Sheboygan last May has been arrested.  Captain Jim Veeser says the 20-year-old suspect was taken into custody at his Milwaukee home without incident.  Police are still seeking others who may have been involved.  He says the arrest was the result of an investigation by Sheboygan detectives, the FBI, state officials, and the Milwaukee and Glendale Police Departments.  The credit union was held up at gunpoint by two men who fled south on I-43.  Still no word on how much was taken.  The suspect is in the county jail awaiting formal charges.

State Budget Passes Assembly On To The Senate

(Wisconsin Radio Network)-The $70 billion State Budget is on its way to State Senate after the State Assembly passed it on a 55 to 42 vote yesterday. Three Republicans voted with Democrats against the budget. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says he believes a Republican amendment to the state budget adopted Wednesday morning should contain all of the changes needed to get the bill through the Senate and on its way to the governor. State Representative Sandy Pasch says Democrats did not retreat by pulling back their more than 200 state budget amendments. Republican State Representative Joan Ballweg of Markesan says, “I applaud my colleagues in the State Assembly for working together to pass a fair and fiscally responsible budget.” Democratic State Representatives Gordon Hintz of Oshkosh says, “This budget fails our economy, fails our kids, fails our families, and undermines Wisconsin’s ability to invest in the future.”

ALC Meeting About Renewal Of Liquor License Cancelled

The Alcohol Licensing Committee meeting scheduled this week to consider non-renewal of a liquor license for the Scott Street Shell was cancelled. City of Fond du Lac officials say Bear Commercial Management Group made a payment of nearly $2,800 ($2,786.85) in personal property taxes owed plus interest and penalties. The morning of the meeting City officials found out that Bear Property Group, which owns the business isn’t the alcohol license holder for the convenience store. That distinction belongs to Bear Commercial Management Group. Bear Property Group does owe more than $30,000 in real estate and personal property taxes on the business. Next Wednesday the City Council will consider whether to renew 13 liquor licenses that weren’t renewed during the Council’s last meeting. That includes the licenses for the Retlaw Hotel and Scott Street Shell.

Senator Grothman Introduces Raw Milk Bill

State Senator Glenn Grothman of West Bend introduces legislation to allow limited sales of raw milk in Wisconsin. Grothman says the farmer would keep more of the money he earns by selling directly to the customer. He hopes this measure would increase milk sales over all. Raw milk will not be available in grocery stores or farmers markets. Certain criteria must be met, including providing clean containers, proper labeling, a posted sign, and sellers must comply with DATCP rules. Opponents claim raw milk has health dangers associated with it, but Grothman says his health-conscious friends swear by it. A public hearing is expected in September or October. Similar bills were introduced in previous legislatures but failed. In 2010, legislation made it all the way to then-governor Jim Doyle's desk, but he vetoed it.

Gudex Favors “Sonya’s Law”

State Senator Rick Gudex says he was in favor of passage of the so-called “Sonya’s Law,” which will require the mother to get an ultrasound before having an abortion. He says it’s about making an informed decision. He says they heard from a quite a few people during committee hearings that their decision to get an abortion might have been different if they had been required to have an ultrasound first. Gudex says he’s pro-life and was favor of the bill, which now goes to the Governor. Two other Abortion bills recently passed by the State Assembly now go to the State Senate. One would prohibit the use of public funds to pay for an abortion of a public employee and the other prohibits an abortion based on the sex of the baby.

FDL Firefighters Had Busy Walleye Weekend

During last week’s Fond du Lac City Council meeting the fire department was praised for its service during Walleye Weekend. In addition to having a booth at Walleye Weekend and a command post in case of any emergencies the fire department found itself responding to two fires opening night of Walleye Weekend. There was a garage fire and a fire at a downtown business. The fire on North Main Street was at Natural World Aquariums and did significant damage to the two-story building. Fire Chief Peter O’Leary says they had to call for mutual aid, but were able to handle everything. He says they planned in the event that they might be spread thin.
