Man Found Guilty for Driving Car into Beaver Dam Middle School

A 22-year-old Beaver Dam man has been found guilty after driving
his car into a school in Beaver Dam in August. Roy Cortez pleaded “No Contest”
in Dodge County Court to one count of Fleeing/Eluding an Officer Causing Bodily
Harm or Property Damage, and the court found him guilty on Monday.

Police were called to a home on Center Street in Beaver Dam
on August 21^st for a domestic disturbance call. After leaving the
scene, Cortez was seen driving past the house while police were still on scene.
An officer tried to stop Cortez, but he sped away – reaching speeds of 80 to 90
miles per hour – before crashing his car into an electrical transformer and an
exterior wall of Beaver Dam Middle School. The school district said the crash
caused half a million dollars in damage.

Cortez initially pleaded “Not Guilty” to the charge in
October, but since changed his plea. He is due back in court for a sentencing
hearing in February.
