Man Killed in I-41 Pileup Identified

The person killed in Sunday’s 100-plus car pileup on Interstate
41 near Neenah has been identified. The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office says
30-year-old Andrew Schefelker of Oshkosh was killed in the chain-reaction crash
that happened in whiteout conditions just after 11 o’clock Sunday morning. Schefelker
was in his first year as a middle school and high school science teacher in the
Iola-Scandinavia School District. Schefelker was the only fatality from the 131-car
pileup, while 71 people were injured. 66 people were treated and released, with
the other five being admitted to local hospitals for their injuries. Other
drivers and passengers were safely removed from their stranded vehicles and taken
to a warming shelter. The majority of vehicles from the crash are believed to be
a total loss and not drive-able. The sheriff’s office said Monday the pileup is
believed to be the largest traffic crash in state history.
