Man With Axe Arrested In NFDL

North Fond du Lac Police Chief Darren Pautsch says a village police officer’s split second decision not to shoot a man armed with an axe was the right one. It happened late Sunday morning at an apartment complex in the area of Audrey Court and Polk Street where a 23-year-old North Fond du Lac man was carrying an axe and saying someone inside the apartment complex was killing people. The 911 caller greeted Officer Jacob Eagan at the scene and pointed out the man who was walking through a backyard carrying the tomahawk-like axe. The officer confronted the man and ordered him to drop the axe. Sheriff’s deputies also arrived at the scene. With guns pointed at him the man raised the axe as if to throw it at the officer. Pautsch says Officer Eagan made the right decision not to shoot the man. Who then lowered the axe and took off running. As he ran the man dropped the axe and was taken into custody after a short foot chase. Police searched the man’s apartment and apartment of upstairs tenants and didn’t find anyone injured or killed. Chief Pautsch commends all of those at the scene who contributed to what he calls a good outcome. The man is being held in emergency detention at the Fond du Lac County Health Care Center. Charges will be referred to the District Attorney's Office for 2nd Degree Reckless Endangerment, Resisting / Obstructing an Officer and Disorderly Conduct.

How can the Chief say Officer Eagan made the right decision? Officer Eagan could have clearly shot and killed this man, however, did not. I hope that's what he meant to say. I'm glad he didn't have to and it all worked out.
