Managing The Cold Temperatures

Fond du Lac County’s Public Health Officer recommends limiting your exposure to the bitter cold temperatures outside over the next few days. Kim Mueller says too much time outdoors could lead to hypothermia or frostbite. She says children and the elderly are at more risk. She says dress in layers and try not to leave skin exposed. She recommends hats, scarves, long sleeves, mittens, water-resistant shoes and coats. She says if you don’t have a warm place to stay there are a couple of warming shelters in Fond du Lac. She says the Solution Center’s warming shelter is open 24 hours during the bitter cold and the Salvation Army is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m..She says signs of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, slurred speech, drowsiness and fumbling hands. In infants their skin would be bright red and they would have lower energy. She also recommends checking on elderly neighbors.
