Medical Condition Believed to Contribute to Crash in Town of FDL Monday Evening

UPDATE: The victim has been identified as 83-year-old Denis Schmitz of Fond du Lac.

A medical condition is believed to have contributed to a
crash that happened in the Town of Fond du Lac Monday where an
83-year-old man from Fond du Lac was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Deputies and a trooper from
the Wisconsin State Patrol responded to the crash, which happened around 4:45
pm in the area of Highway 23 and Townline Road.

Investigators say the 83-year-old was driving a pickup
west on Highway 23, when he crossed the center line, went across the eastbound
lane of traffic, and entered the ditch. The truck continued west through a
field, before coming to rest against a vehicle parked on a private driveway on
Townline Road.

The driver was found unresponsive in the truck.
Life-saving measures were attempted by first responders, but were unsuccessful.
The crash remains under investigation. Authorities say speed and alcohol are
not considered factors in the crash. The name of the driver is being withheld,
pending notification of family.

Also assisting at the scene were Fire and First
Responders from the Town of Fond du Lac and City of Fond du Lac Paramedics.
