More Details Released About Shooting At Algoma Town Hall

Authorities in Winnebago County say a 57-year-old man was hoping to commit “suicide by cop” when he was shot by police at the Algoma Town Hall Thursday. A Sheriff’s dispatcher got a 911 call after the shooting saying Richard Lee Klemz was extremely suicidal and was hoping police would kill him. A Sheriff’s deputy and Oshkosh Police Officer shot Richard Lee Klemz. Klemz was taken to a local hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Prior to the shooting police located his vehicle and he used it to ram a Sheriff’s squad car, then entered the Algoma Town Hall parking lot and hit a private citizen’s vehicle. There was no chase or pursuit of Klemz vehicle. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave while the state’s Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation conducts an investigation into the shooting. Klemz is expected to face criminal charges after he’s released from the hospital.
