Moraine Park Technical College celebrated another
commencement ceremony over the weekend, with nearly 800 students graduating
from the college on Saturday. One of those graduates was Moraine Park’s 2019
Student of the Year, Ashley Martin. Martin, who is a Fond du Lac native graduated
with an Associate’s Degree from the Substance Abuse Counseling program at Moraine
Park. Martin says she chose to attend MPTC thanks to positive word of mouth and
its proximity to home, and chose her program of study because of her interest
in helping people. “I have just that natural inclination for helping those in
need,” Martin said. “With the epidemic in the community, it’s all around us,
whether you suffer from it yourself, a family member, a loved one, a friend.
Really becoming educated so I can become an advocate in the addiction community
is really where my passion is at.”

Martin, who is a mother to four children, says she
finished the degree program in just over two years. She said that feat was only
possible through time management. “That was something I really had to learn at
the beginning. I utilized three different calendars, with just keeping home life
and school life and everything. You prioritize and you make it work.” Martin
says her goal is to build on the Associate’s Degree with a Master’s Degree in
Mental Health Counseling.
