One Dead After ATVs Go Through Ice – UPDATE

On Tuesday, December 23, 2014, at about 6:13 PM Dodge
County Central Communications received a 911 call regarding people who had gone
through the ice on
Fox Lake in northwest Dodge County

 

3 people had gone through the ice.  During the response, it was confirmed that 2
people were out of the water, with one still in the water, unconscious.  The third was rescued by emergency
personnel. 

 

The three subjects involved were all males from Wisconsin and were
riding on ATV’s when they went into the water in a bay on the southwest portion
of the lake.  The two men, Jared Werni, 31, West Bend, WI and Douglas Niggemeier, 38, Meqoun, WI, were able to
get out of the water and yelled for help, with the third, Steven Kellerman, 41, Brookfield, WI, in the water for
approximately an hour until rescue personnel were able to reach him in a rescue
boat.  Kellerman was
transported to the hospital and later pronounced dead.  The cause of death will be determined by the
Dodge County Medical Examiner’s Office. 
The other 2 subjects were treated by EMS
at the scene and released without transport. 
A Fox Lake Police Officer was under Mutual Aid to assist the effort and
received a minor, non-life threatening injury during the rescue and was treated
and expected to be released. 

 

Agencies involved include, Fox Lake Fire and EMS,
Randolph Fire and EMS, Beaver Dam Fire and EMS,
Fox Lake Police, WI DNR Warden, and the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office and
Chaplain.  Flight for Life was contacted
for aid in locating the subject, but was unable to fly due to the weather.  The DNR will be conducting further investigation.
