Ordering Road Salt A Balancing Game

Fond du Lac County Highway Commissioner Tom Janke says ordering road salt for use during winter months is a bit of a balancing game. He says in addition to the County they are ordering salt for a number of municipalities within the County as well. He says there is a risk in ordering it too early. He says those municipalities have limited storage space and if you don’t take a certain amount of road salt you have to pay a docking fee to store it over the summer. Janke says the County made out pretty well last winter ending up with about 3,000 to 4,000 tons of road salt in reserve.
