Oshkosh Schools Ask Parents to Turn Off Idling Cars

The Oshkosh Area School District is asking parents to turn off their engines when dropping kids off and picking them up from school this year. The Oshkosh Sustainability Advisory Board is asking parents to consider the environment and the air kids are breathing. This comes after the board was presented with research outlining the dangers of vehicle emissions – which shows that idling vehicles can irritate asthma symptoms, among other issues. The no idling request is not an ordinance and won’t be enforced – but the board is hoping people will consider it. They add that it’s not always sensible to kill your engine when pulling up to schools or waiting for long periods of time – like when you’re running a car heater in the middle of winter.
