Romanian National Convicted in FDL Credit Card Skimming Case

One of the Romanian nationals involved in a credit card
skimming case in the Fond du Lac area last summer has been convicted. Catalin
A. Capanu was found guilty of seven felonies Monday after pleading guilty to three
counts of Wire Fraud and three counts of Theft from a Financial Institution.
Capanu also plead “No Contest” to a felony count of Battery by Prisoner.
Remaining counts and potential charges in Dane County and Brown County were
read into the record and dismissed. Capanu and Mihai-Alexandru Preda were
arrested last June after suspicious activity was reported at an ATM in Fond du
Lac. 137 cloned credit cards and $7,500 in cash was found in their vehicle. Preda
is set to stand trial in October of this year. Capanu faces up to 21 years in
prison and another 21 years of extended supervision for a total of a 42-year-sentence.
His sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 9th.
