Schimel Announces Completion of Sexual Assault Kit Testing

Attorney General Brad Schimel is announcing the completion of testing on thousands of previously unanalyzed sexual assault evidence kits dating back to the 1980’s. Schimel has been criticized for taking too long to finish testing after the project to test over four-thousand kits began in 2016.

Many kits were stored in police departments and hospital shelves for years without being tested. Five kits submitted since June 1st still remain untested.

Democrat Josh Kaul, who is challenging Schimel in the November election, says delays in testing have left dangerous criminals on the streets. Schimel argues that it took time to inventory the kits and find private labs to analyze them. He did promise testing would be complete by the end of this year.
