Slow Down, Look Both Ways During Trick or Treating

We are just one week away from Halloween, and local safety officials are reminding everyone to pay a bit closer attention during Sunday’s Trick or Treat hours. Division Chief of Fire Prevention Troy Haase says it’s not always easy to spot kids running around the neighborhoods, and they might not be completely familiar with their surroundings.

Haase points out that “we have them dodging between cars and running across the street, so it’s one of those things to be careful, slow down, make sure you’re aware of what’s going on. Kids in neighborhoods aren’t expecting cars to be parked in certain places and they run across the street all the time because there’s no activity. Now with all this added activity, it can cause a problem.”

Haase is asking drivers and parents alike to pay close attention to what kids are doing while running around in their costumes. He says “if you can slow down and be careful, try to Trick or Treat during those hours that are posted – that way you get done before it gets dark. And things are hopefully done safely – and we’ll be out and about trying to slow people down as well.”

He says children get excited about Trick or Treating, “and maybe the little ones are a little more afraid so they maybe won’t dart – it’s those ones that are just old enough to go Trick or Treating by themselves. Maybe eight, ten, twelve, or whatever that number is in your community or neighborhood. But those are the ones that you have to worry about a little bit because they’re maybe not quite old enough to understand all of the issues, but they’re old enough to walk down the block and come back and Trick or Treat.”

Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue and the Fond du Lac Police Department will be out and about reminding people to slow down and be cautious. The Fond du Lac and North Fond du Lac Trick or Treating hours run from 3:30pm-5:30pm Sunday afternoon.
