Smokeout A Good Time To Make A Plan To Quit

The Tobacco Control Coordinator for the Five Counties for Tobacco-Free Living says the Great American Smokeout is about encouraging smokers to make a plan to quit. Today is the 40th anniversary of the Smokeout. Sandy Bernier says quitting is something smokers can do any day of the year if they are motivated. She says Fond du Lac County is around the state average when it comes to people who smoke, but some populations are disproportionately affected by smoking. She says the state average is 17 percent, but people who make less than $24,000 a year, those who have less than a high school degree, and those who are enrolled in Medicaid have a much higher rate of tobacco addiction. She says if you are going to quit share that with family and friends. She says it’s also a good idea to talk with your health care provider to see if medication would be appropriate to help you quit and you can also call the Wisconsin Quit Line at 1-800-784-8669.
