Snowplow Safety
Officials with the Fond du Lac County Highway and Sheriff’s Departments remind drivers to give snow plow drivers on our highways room to work. Sheriff’s Captain Ryan Waldschmidt says if they are traveling 35 miles an hour or more you are supposed to stay behind them by at least 200 feet. If the plow is going less than 35 miles an hour you should be at least 75 feet behind it. County Highway Commissioner Tom Janke says they have a rule of thumb you can follow to stay safe. He says if you can’t see their mirrors they can’t see you and they need room to maneuver especially at intersections. The fine for following a snowplow too closely is $175.30 plus 3 points on your driving record.
