Special Meeting Will Address Proposed Change To Housing Discrimination Ordinance

The Fond du Lac City Council will hold a special meeting next Monday night at 6 p.m. to vote on amending the City’s housing discrimination ordinance. At the end of the last night’s meeting City Council President Sam Meyer read a prepared statement saying they will give the public opportunity to comment on adding, as a protected class “gender identity and expression” to the housing discrimination ordinance. In his statement Meyer says the majority consensus of the city council feels there needs to be closure for the benefit of the community. He says public response to the issue also indicated that the Council should move forward now instead of waiting until a time to be determined in the future.

I'm confused...Mr. Manning withdrew the ordinance stating that the public needed to be educated on this proposal. Why are you forcing a vote without allowing time for this education to take place? Shouldn't the educated and informed be allowed to make this decision, not the uneducated and fearful?

This proposal was withdrawn stating that a lack of understanding and a need for public education. The council should not be forcing a vote on something that was withdrawn, especially when it was withdrawn due to a lack of understanding. Should not the time be given to educate on what this proposal would actually effect be more sensible?
