Special Sessions on Gun Legislation Begin and End Quickly at the Capitol

Governor Tony Evers continues to push for his Republican colleagues to hold a vote on a pair of bills that address gun ownership. The Governor sent a letter Thursday to Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald and Assembly Speaker Robin Vos saying that they are “ignoring the will of the people of the state,” In not taking up these measures.

As expected, both the Senate and Assembly began and then quickly ended their special sessions on Thursday, with no discussion or vote on the measures.

Evers and other supporters of the bills cite a recent Marquette University Law School Poll which showed 80 percent of residents support expanded background checks, and 81 percent of residents support “red flag laws”.

Both Fitzgerald and Vos maintain that the proposals would infringe on Second Amendment rights.
