Staying Warm In Bitterly Cold Temperatures

Fond du Lac County’s Public Health Officer says you should try and limit your time outdoors during sub-zero wind chills. Kim Mueller says you can run the risk of frostbite or hypothermia if you are not properly clothed against the weather. She says you should avoid touching metal surfaces with uncovered hands. She recommends laying yourself with clothing. Hats and ski-masks should be used to cover your nose and ears. Mueller says the Fond du Lac Salvation Army has a warming shelter for those who have no place to go overnight. Check in is from 7 to 9 p.m. and check out at 7 a.m. each morning. Dinner is served at 6:30 on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights. They also have showers and laundry facilities. But she says there are some things the Salvation Army could use. She says those items include gloves, hats, socks, underwear in men’s and women’s sizes, hand sanitizer, Lysol spray, tin foil, and gallon ziplock bags.
