Student Arrested, Faces Attempted Homicide Charge Following Tuesday Incident at Oshkosh West

The Winnebago County Sheriff has confirmed that the 16-year-old involved in Tuesday’s incident at Oshkosh West High School has been arrested by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation.

Sheriff John Matz said in a statement Thursday that the teenager is facing a charge of Attempted First-Degree Intentional Homicide, and is currently being held in the Winnebago County Jail.

Police were called to the school just after 9 am Tuesday morning after the student confronted school resource officer Michael Wissink in his office. The student stabbed Wissink, and Wissink fired his gun – shooting the student. Both Wissink and the student were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Matz said in the statement that he is requesting the media not make a formal request for the student’s name and photograph so as to “reduce any potential contagion effect, and not to glamorize the actions of the perpetrator.”
