Terrible Record Set With Four Traffic Deaths In The Same Day

Fond du Lac County has seen four deaths in traffic accidents on a single day twice before, but never in three separate crashes. Saturday’s snow-covered roads led to three deadly crashes. “I think we probably set a new record and it is a terrible record to have set with these three separate crashes. All three actually had eerily similar sets of circumstances.” Sheriff’s Captain Ryan Waldschmidt says in each accident a driver lost control on a snow-covered road and went over the center line hitting or being struck by another vehicle. He says, “The laws of physics really work against you in the sense that your ability to steer your ability to slow down or stop are significantly impaired with those slippery conditions and that’s exactly what we saw here.” Twice in 2003 Fond du Lac County had traffic accidents where four people were killed, but Waldschmidt says in the last 40 years they have never had four people killed in three separate accidents on the same day. During Saturday’s snow storm deputies responded to 16 property damage accidents, four injury accidents including the three fatal crashes, and 20 runoffs.
