Tornado Drills Today

As part of Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week in Wisconsin there will be simulated tornado warnings today. Fond du Lac County Communications and Emergency Management Director Bobbi Hicken says a simulated watch will be issued at 1 p.m. this afternoon with a simulated warning at 1:45 p.m. “Now in this situation for these warnings, these drills, your apps won’t go off in your phone, the Emergency Activation System that will not happen, but the weather radios will.” Hicken said. A second mock tornado warning will be issued at 6:45 p.m. That drill provides kids and their families an opportunity to practice severe weather safety plans at home. Hicken notes there was a small tornado in Waucousta last year, but no major tornadoes in Fond du Lac County. “One of the things we want to make sure is that people don’t become complacent.” Hicken said. “Oh we only had one tornado last year, it’s not going to happen in Fond du Lac County, nothing is going to happen in the City, a tornado is not going to come into the City.  We don’t want that mentality, we want people to be constantly ready because it could happen and it will at some point.” In the event of real severe weather the statewide drills would be postponed until Friday.
