Tornado & Severe Weather Awareness Week

This week is Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week in Wisconsin and Fond du Lac County Communications and Emergency Management Director Bobbi Hicken says the most important thing to do when there is a Tornado Warning is take shelter. Hicken says you should take shelter preferably in your basement if you have one and you should have an emergency kit and non-perishable food and water sources. As part of the week there will be mock tornado drills on Thursday. A mock tornado watch will be issued at 1 p.m. and a mock tornado warning at 1:45 p.m. There will be a second mock tornado warning that evening. There will be no mock tornado watch issued before the mock warning at 6:45 p.m. Hicken says it is an opportunity for people at home to practice their tornado safety. Since 1844 there have been 48 tornadoes in Fond du Lac County. Only four of the state’s 72 counties have had more over those years. One of the four is neighboring Dodge County, which has had 61. Dane has had the most with 81. Last year, there were 16 tornado touchdowns in Wisconsin.
