Tuesday is Lightning Awareness Day

Fond du Lac County Emergency Management is recognizing Tuesday as Lightning Awareness Day in Wisconsin. The day is a reminder about the dangers of lightning and how people can stay safe during storms.  Dozens of people are killed by lightning across the country each year, and hundreds others are injured. Seven deaths have been reported in Wisconsin over the past decade. Health officials say if someone you are with is struck, to immediately dial 911 and begin CPR. The human body does not hold an electrical charge, so it’s not dangerous to touch the person. It’s recommended to get inside for shelter – but it’s also advised to never hide under trees, near water, or in an open area.
