Two FDL County Jail Inmates Test Positive for COVID-19

16-May-2020

Two Fond du Lac County Jail inmates have tested positive for COVID-19.

In a news release issued Saturday, Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt explained that the first positive test was returned Wednesday on a man who was serving his sentence at home, with Huber privileges and is monitored by jail staff through a GPS device. The release says the man worked with his personal healthcare provider to get tested after experiencing symptoms, and immediately notified jail staff. Waldschmidt says the man continues to recover at home and is in isolation.

The second positive test came back Friday evening from a man who was tested during an initial 14-day quarantine that all new inmates booked into the jail undergo. The inmate remains asymptomatic and is in isolation, with jail staff monitoring his condition. The police agency that arrested and transported the man was also informed of the positive test.

Waldschmidt says that all staff and inmates are being tested for COVID-19 through a collaborative effort through the jail’s health care provider and the Fond du Lac County Health Department.

“The health and safety of our jail staff, their families they return to after every shift, and the wellbeing of our inmate population has always been and will continue to be our top priority in our jail”, Waldschmidt said. “The work our correctional and healthcare staff perform on a daily basis is never easy, and the support and recognition our community has shown for their work is very much appreciated.”
