Veterans Service Officer on Memorial Day Parade

It’s the start of Memorial Day Weekend, which means Monday’s parade is right around the corner. Fond du Lac County Veterans Services Officer Rick Patton says it’s a bit different than most parades – as only flags are allowed to be handed out, instead of candy and fliers.

Patton says many people treat the day like a party, but reminds everyone that it’s a solemn occasion. He tells us “it’s not national barbecue day, we’re not out there shoving beers down our throat and having a good time. It’s a reflective time. We’re honoring those who died in serving our country and we need to remember that.”

The parade begins at 10:00am Monday morning. A program starts immediately afterwards – with a keynote speech from Retired US Army Colonel Joseph Moore, who is also the Fond du Lac City Manager.
