Waupun Passes Resolution Opposing ‘Dark Store’ Loophole

Waupun city officials are approving a resolution to back a
statewide initiative to eliminate a Dark Store tax loophole that big box stores
are using the lower their property taxes. The Dark Store concept is where
bigger retailers have their property assessed as if no on is operating in them
– which would have significantly lower taxes.

Waupun joins 44 other cities
around the state that have put similar resolutions in place – saying it’s an
effort to protect citizens against the loophole and making sure they don’t
experience large swings in tax payments. Officials are not aware of any
businesses in Waupun that are taking advantage of the loophole at this time.
