WI Attorney General Invites Public Comment on Legal Opinions

Attorney General Josh Kaul is looking for public comment as
he drafts legal opinions. Kaul announced Monday that he is setting up a new
website where people can comment on pending requests for attorney general
opinions. All commentary submitted will be subject to the state’s open records
law. Kaul said in a news release that he wants to “make the opinion writing
process as transparent and open to the public as possible.” Opinions of the Attorney
General typically provide guidance when confusion exists about the meaning of a
statute, and state appeals courts have not yet definitively answered the
question. Courts in the state are not obligated to follow the A.G.’s opinion,
