Wound Care Services Expanded At Waupun Clinic

More than eight million people in the United States suffer from chronic wounds that are difficult to heal due to diseases and conditions, such as diabetes, obesity, aging and the late effects of radiation therapy.

The opening of Agnesian Wound Care services at Waupun Memorial Hospital’s lower level, 620 W. Brown Street, in mid-December is bringing the community state-of-the-art treatment and practices to treat these chronic wounds.

“Our wound care services offer individuals many new treatment options to assist in managing and healing chronic wounds, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) for those who qualify,” says Jon Moen, MD (pictured above), an Agnesian HealthCare board-certified general surgeon and medical director of Agnesian Wound Care.

Agnesian Wound Care professionals have specialized and comprehensive training utilizing experience and successes demonstrated through a national program that has treated patients with two million chronic non-healing wounds.

Kristin Auer (pictured below), APNP, a nurse practitioner, is caring for patients at the Waupun clinic, in concert with Dr. Moen and Jonathan Stroebel, DPM, a podiatrist (ankle and foot physician) and member of the Agnesian Wound Care team. She earned her nursing degree from Alverno College and her nurse practitioner degree from Concordia University. She has previous experience in providing wound care in both inpatient (hospital) and outpatient settings.

Each patient that receives care through Agnesian Wound Care receives a treatment plan designed with their specific needs in mind, using evidence-based wound management practices, in addition to HBO medicine. Agnesian Wound Care providers use a variety of clinical treatments, therapies and support services to treat chronic wounds in an outpatient setting.

“Likely candidates for treatment at Agnesian Wound Care are those experiencing diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, infections, radiation side effects and other wounds that have not healed within 30 days,” says Dr. Stroebel.

The new area features four treatment rooms, separate nurses’ station for confidentiality and a separate room for the two hyperbaric chambers.

Hyperbaric oxygen is a treatment, in which a patient breathes 100 percent oxygen intermittently while inside a treatment chamber at a pressure higher than sea level pressure. The treatment quickly delivers high concentrations of oxygen to the bloodstream, and assists in the healing process. It also stimulates the growth of new blood vessels and improves circulation. 

HBOT can help reduce swelling, fight infection, and build new blood vessels, and produces healthy tissue. 

Agnesian Wound Care will have clear chambers that are equipped with televisions and comfortable bedding so patients are free to rest comfortably during their treatment. Most treatment sessions in the chamber last approximately 90 minutes.
