2017 HS Football Previews : Oakfield Oaks

25-Jul-2017

The Oakfield Oaks open the 2017 campaign with optimism as they come off a successful season in eight-man football. Oakfield finished 6-3 and reached the “second place” game of the Eight-Man Football Jamboree at DC Everest High School last year, losing to Luck by a score of 30-14. Oaks head coach Corey Rickert says last season was overall a good year for the team, that the team “showed a lot of perseverance” and that a lot of players stepped up when it was needed to give them a sense of confidence moving into this year.

When it comes to this year’s team, Rickert says the Oaks are a veteran group. “Our leaders are mainly seniors and we’ve lost only two starters on each side of the ball so we should be very set as far as our starters go”, Rickert said.  Rickert added that the Oaks are a very large team as they had a lot of freshmen and sophomores come out for football last year, so there may be some younger players ready to step in.

In the offseason, Oakfield had two representatives in the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Eight-Man All-Star game at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh. DuWayne Balthazor IV and Jason Culver played in the game and Rickert served on the coaching staff. In addition, Balthazor and Culver were named team captains. Rickert says it was a “good experience to learn from other coaches and to watch really good players during the week”. He says it was “extremely beneficial” for all involved.

Another offseason move saw Oaks assistant Ethan Kintzler get hired for the head coaching position at Waupun High School. Rickert says he’s excited for Kintzler’s opportunity and says Kintzler “has the talent and ability to do what it takes to get kids driven to play for him”.
