Blue Jays Hold Off Fondy

The Fond du Lac Cardinals were beaten by Menasha 38-26 on Friday night at Calder Stadium.  After stuffing Menasha on a 4th and 1 on their first drive of the game, the Cardinals offense struck first when Jake Walgenbach hit Brian Luteyn on a 26 yard TD  pass to make it 6-0 at the 3:54 mark of the 1st quarter. It took Menasha just 1:21 seconds to march down the field and take the 7-6 lead when Tyler Johnson hit Dakota Reimer on a 35 yard TD pass.  In the 2nd quarter Menasha got a 23-yard TD run from Johnson and a 1 yard run from Dylan Szews to take a 21-6 lead.  Walgenbach hit Marcus Ruch for a six yard TD pass with :04 left in the half.  The two-point conversion failed making it 21-12 at the half.  Menasha expanded their lead to 28-12 on a six-yard Szews run in the 3rd quarter. In the fourth, the Blue Jays added a 50 yard pass from Johnson to Reimer and a 26 yard field goal to make it 28-12.  Fondy put two scores up late as Justin Maratik ran in from 2 yards out with :20 seconds left.  Maratik then caught a 19 yard TD pass as time expired.  Maratik had 21 carries for 83 yards and 1 rushing TD to go along with his TD reception.  Ty Krueger ran 6 times for 63 yards and caught 4 passes for 35 yards.   Kyle Pierce had 11 carries for 45 yards.   Brian Luteyn caught 6 passes for 75 yards.  Marcus Ruch had 3 catches for 26 yards and a TD.  Jake Walgenbach completed 15 of 25 passes for 3 TDs. He also had 2 interceptions.  Fondy is now 3-5 on the season and 3-3 in the Valley Football Association South Division.  If the Cardinals beat Wisconsin Rapids next Friday at Fruth Field on Homecoming, they will qualify for the postseason.  You’ll hear the game on News-Talk 1450 KFIZ and streaming at kfiz.com.  Menasha improves to 6-1 in the league and still have hopes of sharing a league title if they win and Marshfield beats Oshkosh North next week.
