New Look Green Bay
Packers Kick Off Training Camp at St. Norbert College

Every summer for the
past 61 years, St. Norbert College has had the pleasure of hosting the Green
Bay Packers for training camp and this year is no different.  The Packers moved in to Victor McCormick Hall, a residence hall for St. Norbert students,
on Tuesday, July 24th.

While the Packers
players and coaches will not be using St. Norbert College’s football field or
sports facilities, St. Norbert does provide them with living arrangements and
meals at Ruth’s Marketplace, St. Norbert’s nationally recognized dining hall.

As a current student at
St. Norbert and former resident of VMC Hall, I love the tradition between my
school and the Green Bay Packers.  One
story I heard as I was visiting the school about four years ago told the tale
of Brett Favre and the ice cream machine. While the Packers were staying on
campus for training camp years ago, Brett Favre had a craving for ice cream, so
he bought the soft serve ice cream machine that is still in use at the
cafeteria today. Whether that rumor is true remains to be seen but it’s always
fun hearing stories like that.

As the NFL season draws
near, the busy Packer offseason has fans eager to see their new look team in
action. After restructuring their front office and coaching staff over the
winter, the Packers are looking to get back to the playoffs after a subpar
season in 2017.

One of the notable
offseason transactions includes releasing WR Jordy Nelson and then signing TE
Jimmy Graham. The Packers haven’t had a dominant tight end in years and Jimmy
Graham could be the perfect addition for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The new
front office has shown the premium they are placing on improving their porous
defense by spending their first two draft picks on cornerbacks and signing
defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson. These moves should help that process along
quite nicely.

The Packers will open
the preseason on August 8th against the Tennessee Titans before kicking off
their 100th anniversary regular season campaign at home against the rival
Chicago Bears on Sunday, September 9th in primetime fashion.
