High School Wrestling:

The Fond du Lac wrestling team placed 13th at the Highlander Varsity Invitational on Friday at Homestead High School. The Cardinals scored 183.5 team points, and were led by Isaac Ortegon who placed third at 138 pounds and Logan Naker who placed third at 145 pounds.

On Saturday, the North Fond du Lac/St. Mary’s Springs wrestling team competed at the De Pere Redbird Duals. The Oriole/Ledger team placed second in their pool, with wins over Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol, Oconto and Green Bay United before falling to Antigo. In the third place match, NFDL/SMSA fell to West De Pere 36-32. Marcus Orlandoni went 5-0 at the De Pere duals, while Andrew Forsythe was 4-0. Abe Giebel, Dalton Fritch and Sam Koffman all went 4-1 at the duals.

NFC Championship Game:

Philadelphia 38, Minnesota 7

–Nick Foles threw for 352 yards and three touchdowns as the Eagles routed the Vikings to advance to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 2004-05 season, where they lost to New England in Super Bowl 39

AFC Championship Game:

New England 24, Jacksonville 20

–Tom Brady tossed two fourth quarter touchdown passes to Danny Amendola, including the game-winner with 2:48 left in the game to send the Patriots to Super Bowl 52 in Minneapolis. The Patriots rallied from down 10 to win and return to the Super Bowl for the second year in a row and third time in four years.

Houston’s J.J. Watt, Carolina’s Greg Olsen and Baltimore’s Benjamin Watson are the finalists for the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year award. Watt, in his seventh NFL season, and a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, had the goal of raising $200,000 for Hurricane Harvey relief in Houston. His fundraising did a whole lot more, bringing in an incredible $37 million in 19 days. Olson is recognized for his two initiatives, one to fight breast cancer and another to help children with a congenital heart defect, while Watson’s One More Foundation has recently done work to combat human trafficking, modern-day slavery and other forms of violence against the poor. This year’s award winner will be announced on February 3rd at the NFL Honors ceremony.
