NFL:

Packers President Mark Murphy announced Tuesday that General Manager Ted Thompson will transition to a role as senior advisor to football operations. The move was first reported Monday by NFL.com, one day after the Packers closed out the season with a 35-11 loss to Detroit at Ford Field. The loss dropped the Packers to 7-9 on the season, their first losing season since 2008. The Packers had made the playoffs eight years in a row, dating back to 2009. Thompson just finished his 13th season as the team’s leader of football operations, and his tenure was highlighted by a Super Bowl 45 Championship along with six NFC North titles. Thompson was also named the NFL’s Executive of the Year by the Sporting News in 2007 and 2011.

Murphy also confirmed Tuesday that the team signed Mike McCarthy to a contract extension during the season. The one-year extension keeps McCarthy in Green Bay through the 2019 season.
