NFL:

The N-F-L says the second flag on Detroit Lions defensive end Trey Flowers shouldn’t have been thrown.  Flowers was called for a pair of penalties which extended drives for the Green Bay Packers in a 23-22 decision on Monday Night Football. The first gave the Packers a first down and negated a sack that would have forced a punt. Three plays later Aaron Rodgers threw a T-D pass to Allen Lazard from the 35. The second flag for illegal use of hands doomed the Lions.  The Packers would have been forced to kick the go-ahead field goal with enough time for Detroit to come back. Instead, Green Bay ran out the clock and Mason Crosby kicked the game-winner as time ran out.

Major League Baseball:

Christian Yelich has been named the Milwaukee Brewers’ Most Valuable Player for the 2019 season.  The outfielder still has a shot at the same honor for the National League, but that announcement is still to come.  Brandon Woodruff was voted by the local chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of American as the team’s most valuable pitcher.  Catcher Yasmani Grandal was named the top newcomer and reliever Junior Guerra the Brewers’ unsung hero. Chase Anderson won the Good Guy Award.

Baseball America has named Brewers second baseman Keston Hiura to its 2019 “All Rookie Team”. Hiura hit .303 with 23 doubles, 19 home runs and 49 RBI on the season that saw him make his Major League debut in May. Joining Hiura on the all-rookie squad are Dodgers catcher Will Smith, Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, Cardinals third baseman Tommy Edman and Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. Outfielders Eloy Jimenez (White Sox), Bryan Reynolds (Pittsburgh) and Yordan Alvarez (Houston) along with DH Vlad Guerrero Jr. (Toronto) round out the team.

National League Championship Series:

Washington 7, St. Louis 4

–Turnabout is fair play – after the Cardinals posted 10 runs in the finale of the National League Division Series to beat the Braves, the Nationals scored seven times in the first inning against St. Louis to complete the four game sweep in the National League Championship Series Tuesday night. The World Series will be coming to Washington D.C. for the first time since 1933 – when the Washington Senators made it, only to lose to the New York Giants in five games.

American League Championship Series:

Houston 4, NY Yankees 1

–Astros starter Gerrit Cole struck out seven in seven shutout innings – with Jose Altuve and Josh Reddick hitting solo home runs to help out on offense – as Houston took a 2-1 series lead over the Yankees.
