KFIZ Sports Two-a-Days : St. Mary’s Springs Ledgers
2017 was another successful season for St. Mary’s Springs
Football. The Ledgers posted an unbeaten season and won the school’s seventh
WIAA State Championship – their 15th all-time. Will 2018 bring
another gold ball to The Ledge? That, of course, will play out on the field,
but the Ledgers as always are a favorite to return to Camp Randall and compete
for a title.
Despite all of their success in 2017, the Ledgers are focused
solely on 2018. “We do not discuss last year. We’re focused only on what we’re
doing and what we need to do for the next game” head coach Bob Hyland said. “We very seldom bring up the past, although
the kids do talk a lot about the history and tradition that we’ve developed
there – they know about it, and they don’t want to be the ones to falter a
little bit.”
A number of key players return for St. Mary’s Springs this
year, including quarterback Mitchell Waechter and receiver Cade Christensen – a
duo that accounted for three touchdowns in last year’s Division Six title game,
including a touchdown pass from Christensen to Waechter that was the game’s
final touchdown. Other key returners include Ezra Tucker and Jake Schrauth – a unanimous
first team All-Conference selection on both the offensive and defensive line.
St. Mary’s Springs once again will face several tough
challenges in the non-conference, including a road matchup with the defending
Division Five State Champion Amherst in week two. Coach Hyland said the challenge
of playing teams like Amherst or Cedar Grove-Belgium helps his players focus on
preparation. “When you have the competition like that, you get ready for them a
little bit more. So you get ready, week after week, you play them one at a
time, don’t look ahead – and that’s the way we do our system.”
